Five Pears Design

Interview #38 - Five Pears Design

Good morning and I hope that your Sunday morning Is going great. It’s a pretty cold one this morning so I hope that you all are keeping nice and toasty with the heater on, coffee in hand. I have been thinking more and more about ways that I can utilise this blog for the better and what features I should think about incorporating into my new website design. With so many ideas and new features I would want to incorporate, its amazing and if anyone reading has any ideas of what you would like to see more of through here, please let me know. I absolutely love writing about new and unique businesses every week and I hope that everyone reading this is loving them too!

For this week’s business, I had the pleasure of learning more about Five Pears Design, a small business located in Jamberoo NSW that focuses on providing products for mothers and babies that are eco-friendly and sustainable. By providing simple designs that are functional for the everyday mother and helps assist in a more economical lifestyle.

Like all the businesses I have interviewed, each one has a unique story and beginning to how they got to where they are.

MEET JANET!

Janet is the lovely women I had the pleasure of interviewing. She is the owner and mastermind behind the handmade products you see from Five Pears Design and is loving every moment of her newly founded business turned into a passion. As a mother herself, she understands the struggles that many may find for young babies and young mothers and has been able to provide and fill that gap with the reusable and sustainable products she creates. This includes baby wipes to wet bags.

The start of her journey, that is now Five Pears Design, began a couple of years ago when Janet was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that changed her life for the better. With her health in check and under control, Janet was given a new clarity on life of where she wants to be and what she wants to do. She took this opportunity as an escape from her previous business doing bookkeeping to move towns closer to the coast and leapt into the idea to start making things for children, discovering a love for sewing and helping the environment. Even though Janet still does bookkeeping on the side, she hopes that Five Pears Design will grow and become sufficient enough so she can sew all she wants.

With the joy of helping people and being able to bring happiness to others through the handmade creations she makes is a very positive bonus.

With the aim and mission to help reduce waste, improve their environmental impact and being able to teach others about the importance about these products too, Five Pears Design allows for these practises to be taught and recognised in the household, especially by children understanding the importance of their purpose.

Along with this, there is also great understanding and meaning behind the name of the business itself. Janet had the help of her friend who assisted in the naming. Janet, in her home, has pears everywhere in her home, which one can only be led to assume that she loves pears! And for those that know the Bible, Five means grace and that’s where Five Pears Design’s stemmed from, allowing her designs to spread happiness and showcasing her love for sewing.

What tips would you give to someone starting their own business?

“Definitely do research and probably be a little bit better than I am on your social media. I think that’s my downfall and I also think that you must have some confidence where I also lack. So make sure you go in quite positive and you should be fine. Instead of going in saying I hope this works, you should be saying, this is going to work, I know it’s going to work, going in with that sort of mindset.”

Amongst all the products that Janet hand sews, she hopes that her customers can not only use something that’s pretty but is also helping them practice sustainable actions by proactive buying them while also hoping that they provide happiness. Other than her cloth being plain white, Janet chooses fabrics that have colourful designs and patterns to them, that not only make her feel better and happy. With everything being hand made and sewn individually, it can sometimes get quite a time consuming but while doing something she loves, Janet wouldn’t change it for anything. It does get quicker and quicker every time she sews, but all the work that goes into each product makes it all that much worthwhile.

Along with these, Five Pears Design is unlike any other business I have seen nevertheless interviewed and I love how different her products are and the versatility of some. Having reusable baby wipes as well is also a major point of difference. With a bamboo backing rather than cotton, it allows her products to be even more sustainable and have an extra layer of protection when it comes to bacteria.

Her future looks bright and she hopes to further expand upon and grow Five Pears Design with the continuity of customers coming back and back time again. Even though at the beginning of her journey was quite doubtful, she had her faith with her and wasn’t going to stress over whether or not it would be successful or not. But even so, now that she is becoming quite successful, there is so much to explore.

How would you describe your business in one sentence?
