Interview #22 - Sweet Sundaiz

Before heading into the actual blog, I would just like to say welcome back to all you lovely readers. I had a well-needed break for a few weeks which allowed me the time to rest and think things over with this blog and everything else that is happening in my life. I am excited to be back and I will start getting back into the regular Monday schedule of posting next week but as you all know, you can’t force creativity and I can’t force myself to write something when I’m not in the mood. I hope that you are all enjoying my blog posts so far, even though it has only been a few months I am very grateful and thankful that I have returning visitors to my blog and generously welcome new ones. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any enquires about literally anything at all! Whether it be a particular business you want to see featured or whether it is just a suggestion you may have that can help me improve, I am open to all!. Now, onto this week’s post.

I had the opportunity to interview Stacey Constantine, who is the owner, founder, and creator of Sweet Sundaiz. The name alone hooks you. Sweet Sundaiz is a Melbourne based business that has only been officially up and running since October 2019 and since then it has been booming. Before starting her business, Stacey had begun her passion for becoming a primary school teacher and is now teaching kids in Prep which happened at the beginning of 2019. During the course of the year, she discovered polymer clay and started making miniature food earrings for which she would surprise her kids by coming to class each day with a new pair. And that’s how it all began for Stacey, she never thought of how successful she has become with so much more ahead. Sweet Sundaiz aims to cater to everyone and anyone from teenagers starting from 13 to people all the way to their 30s. Stacey wants people to buy them and have fun while wearing them, it helps people feel nostalgic by wearing old Australian treats on their ears and sparks up a conversation.

When starting the business, it was more as a side hobby for Stacey as she was also teaching during the day so it was something she could as a relaxing wind-down and also something she found fun. Everything happened very quickly for Stacey but she wouldn’t have changed it. When she first started, she was playing with the clay for less than a month when she knew it was going to turn into something more. The very first pair of earrings that she made was a pair of doughnuts, which you can see on her Instagram page. Having always had a creative side to her personality, she saw the opportunity with polymer clay that could be something fun and crafty. The drawing side of it she has never been fond of but being able to make small fiddly things fit perfectly.

Stacey had no particular person as an inspiration behind starting the business but it would most likely be her love of food and her love of miniature items and a combined love as well with the kids that she teaches. Her earrings that she makes are obviously food-related so by putting the two together, combined with a passion of creating her own recipes as well, this seemed like the perfect option. Stacey would make the earrings different each time she had a class to teach and all the time both the kids and the parents love the authenticity of them. Every single pair of earrings that she makes are extremely detailed and close to the real thing as possible but Stacey also ensures that her customers know that they aren’t edible!

Like anyone starting a new business, especially in the creative area where they are making something from scratch, the main tool I find people telling me most often that they use is YouTube. And this is what Stacey did, especially when finding out what tools and techniques were best to use for the right type of polymer clay. Once she found all this out through multiple videos and this was the extent of her research you could say that she did. Everything else from the actual earrings themselves for which she just eyeballs the amounts through trial and error but also the business side of things which she is learning as she goes along. Her biggest challenge that she found was actually the technical side and creating her website, but always, YouTube was a major help as she had never done anything like that before.

What tips would you give to someone starting their own business?

“So you would definitely want to use YouTube to your advantage because there are a lot of very cool tips on there. And in terms of my type of business, getting yourself a really good polymer clay, I would do your research before you get it. I personally use Premo Sculpey which is quite firm because obviously if it is too soft it just mushes together but it does all depend on what you are making. For example, if you are just making normal earrings, almost anything could be fine but food-wise, it is very delicate and intricate, something that is firm works better. But yeah, investing in good quality materials is the way to go.”

During the trial stages, you could say of Sweet Sundaiz, before Stacey actually sold anything, there was a lot of trial and error when making the earrings, but that was to be expected and is expected with any craft like that. Since starting, even though it has only been a few months, she has progressively gotten better with each pair she makes. The hardest part for Stacey was trying to create her own style that helps her be unique and makes a clear distinction from everyone else. She always turns to her customer’s advice and opinions when making some of her decisions and will turn to Instagram for a poll or voting system to determine and understand the styles and likes of her customers. Her uniqueness makes Sweet Sundaiz very fun and it gets people to talk about her business because they think it’s something so random but also something they would most likely not forget.

The name Sweet Sundaiz, and spelled the way it is, is a very different name but also unique to Stacey and what her business is. The combination of food with the word Sweet and the day Sunday spelled with a z aligns well because initially, Stacey had the thought of having pancakes on a Sunday which helped stem the name for the business. Making miniature food earrings was always at the top of the list for what she wanted to make. She attempted to make other items that aren’t food-related but couldn’t seem to grasp it, making food items seemed to come the easiest to her. She has found that the hardest item to make is any pastry item due to the number of layers they have and to replicate the flakiness and thinness of the pastry itself.

Sweet Sundaiz is an ever-growing business that allows customers to buy fun, cute and dainty earrings that are made with care and high quality. Everything from the beginning to end, even with packaging which is very cute and fun loaded with surprises (if you want to know what they are, just buy some earrings!) Is thought perfectly as Stacey strives herself and her business on the quality she produces.

How would you describe your business in one sentence?

Cute, fun food jewelry
